black|UP Lip Lacquers & Lipsticks Swatches and Review

black|Up cosmetic lipstick and lip lacquers

black|UP Cosmetics is a high-end beauty brand dedicated to women of colour. Based in fashion capital Paris, France the brand was developed to cater to the beauty needs of darker skin tones. As a woman of colour, it sometimes a struggle to find product that are pigmented and not ashy on my skintone. With that in mind I was eager to trial what black|Up had to offer... I picked up three different product in all from black|UP which were three of their lip lacquers, two lipsticks and one blusher (which will be reviewed separately).

(Left to right: no.6, no.10 and no.11)

The lip lacquers retail at £16 which is quite pricey, for your £16 you get 7ml of lip lacquer. The product come is simple plastic packaging not the sleekest but acceptable. The applicator does leave a bit to be desired so you probably better off applying this product with a lip brush. I picked up three shades from the Debenhams website. As there weren't many reviews of the brand I relied purely on the brands swatches on the website which varied quite a bit from the shades I eventually received.

The shades I have are:
  • No.11/VL10 - a warm hot pink
  • No.10/VL10 - a deep pink red (I thought this would be more a berry purple from the online swatches)
  • No.6/VL06 - medium purple
The performance of these varied from shade to shade. No.11 is my favourite of the bunch. Despite the shade looking quite tomatoey red in the packaging the lip lacquer is actually a gorgeous rich hot pink. I love the pigmentation on this one; it's opaque and the glossy finish is fabulous. It almost looks like a glossy liquid lipstick. No.10  is not as pigmented but it is still pretty. It applies evenly and with a lipliner or lipstick underneath it looks really nice. No.6 was really the one I most excited about but it let me down the most in honesty. I really wanted this one because purple is my favourite colour but No.6 is not as pigmented as either of the other shades. It applies a bit patchy and settles in lip lines. It's not an awful shade, it just needs more work than either of the shades.

black|UP Cosmetics Lipsticks in no.22 and no.28
(No.22 and No.28)

Onto the two lipsticks... These puppies retail at £16.50 more expensive than a MAC lipstick. The packaging is a bit weighty which makes it feel more high-end. I like the way you can see the colour on the bottom label which is a plus especially  if you have a larger makeup collection. The lipstick have the word 'UP' marked on the actual lipstick which is a cute feature. The packaging whilst no mind blowing is functional and nice.

Once again I was duped by the online swatches into believing I was receiving two purple lippies. What I received was an iridescent hot pink (no.22) and an iridescent violet lipstick (no.28). These are nicely pigmented. Two coats give you a more opaque, fuller coverage look. I'm not a huge fan of iridescent or frust type finishes on lipstick if I completely honest but these aren't too bad at all. No.28 is similar to MAC Violetta but darker and No.22 I feel would be comparable to MAC Show Orchid. This lipsticks are OK, I feel they performed alright on the lips but I feel for the price point I expected better.
